Wealthsimple powers the next evolution of investing in Canada

October 22, 2025 (Toronto, ON) — Today, Wealthsimple took investing in Canada to the next level. At the fall 2025 edition of Wealthsimple Presents: For Nerds Only, the company announced a new suite of products designed to give Canadians every advantage possible to grow their wealth.

Wealthsimple Presents: For Nerds Only saw more than 220,000 Canadians register for the livestream, double the amount of registrants for End of Banking? in June. Hundreds of clients, industry leaders, and other investing nerds attended in person at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto.

Over the past decade, Wealthsimple has evolved into a full-stack financial platform, empowering Canadians to invest, save, and spend on their own terms. Fuelled by Canadians’ growing demand for innovative financial solutions, Wealthsimple announced that it hit $100 billion in total assets under administration, a major milestone that it achieved three years ahead of its original goal of December 2028.

The latest additions to Wealthsimple’s product suite — including zero-commission options, fractional ownership of physically-backed gold, direct indexing, the mutual fund exchange, the Retirement Accelerator, and the Summit Portfolio — reflect the company's commitment to building a comprehensive financial platform that keeps pace with the shifting needs of Canadian investors. They are more confident, more engaged, and more willing to take control over their own financial futures. And traditional brokerages aren’t keeping up.

A recent study that surveyed 1,000 Wealthsimple clients with $50,000+ in investable assets (ages 25–45), shows just how pronounced this shift is:

  • Confidence is soaring and clients are embracing their inner ‘finance nerd’: 92% feel confident in managing their own investments. And they’re more open to risk, with 69% reporting above-average risk tolerance.
  • Do-it-yourself investing is becoming mainstream: 67% believe taking control of their own investment decisions is the best approach for them, with more than half (55%) saying they have declined advisor recommendations in favour of making independent choices.
  • Meanwhile, they feel they’re being held back: 79% feel financial institutions are slow to innovate. Outdated infrastructure, high fees, and slow technology adoption are all cited as barriers to reaching their savings goals.

“Canadians are increasingly ‘nerding out’ on investment and trading strategies to build their wealth. These are strategies and tools that institutional and wealthy investors have been using for decades,” said Tara Kennedy, VP and Head of Capital Markets at Wealthsimple. “Today's retail investor is intentional, curious, and motivated. They deserve modern, intuitive tools to maximize the opportunities within capital markets, and the new updates to our platform are designed to ensure those needs are met.”

“Successful investing comes down to three fundamentals: low fees, diversification, and taking smart risks,” said Brett Huneycutt, co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Wealthsimple. “We’re launching dozens of features against each of these fundamentals – in the service of helping our clients build more wealth in the long run.”

Access to the best investment experience

Wealthsimple’s clients already benefit from managed portfolios, self-directed investing, tax-optimized ETFs, crypto trading, and more. Now, responding to investors’ demand for more sophisticated tools and strategies, the company is adding new products and features with the most competitive fees in Canada.

Starting today, Wealthsimple clients will have access to:

  • Zero-commission options: Wealthsimple will be the first and only brokerage in Canada to offer true zero-commission option contracts. Most brokers still charge a per-contract fee, even if commissions are labelled as “zero.”
  • Direct Indexing portfolio: Wealthsimple is one of the few platforms in Canada that will offer access to direct indexing, a process that typically involves support from an advisor. Through strategic tax-loss harvesting, the company’s Direct Indexing portfolio helps Wealthsimple clients outperform the corresponding market index by 0.5% each year after taxes.
  • Gold trading: With the lowest fees in Canada, Wealthsimple will be the only Canadian brokerage to allow clients to trade real gold, securely and seamlessly, 24/7, in Canadian dollars, with as little as $1. The company works with trusted custodians to store physical gold for clients at no cost, with the option for home delivery.
  • Crypto: Wealthsimple Crypto’s new fee structure is based on a client’s 30-day trading volume. Clients pay the lower rate between their account tier and their recent trading activity. Pricing can go as low as 0.05%. The company continues to expand its crypto offering, recently adding more than 40 new assets to its 100-plus lineup. Clients can also convert between USD and USDC instantly with zero fees, making it faster and easier to move between cash and crypto.
  • Mutual fund exchange: Canadians pay some of the highest mutual fund fees in the world—up to 2%. Wealthsimple will let clients move accounts with mutual funds to the platform, cover the transfer fees, and help clients reinvest their money in portfolios that deliver similar market exposure with lower fees.
  • Full-service wealth management: Clients can now access sophisticated advice typically reserved for family offices — but for less. Unlike traditional firms that require millions to get started, Wealthsimple’s service is available to clients with as little as $100,000 to invest. As a client’s wealth grows, their fee drops to as low as 0.5% — about half of what most financial advisors charge.

Coming soon

Wealthsimple will continue to roll out its new investing products and features through 2026, including:

  • Summit portfolio: The most advanced portfolio Wealthsimple has ever built. Meant for long-term investors, the company’s Summit Portfolio offers unprecedented access to private markets with alternative investments like private equity and private credit. Switching from high-fee mutual funds to a Summit portfolio could let clients retire 47% richer through fee-savings alone. (Q4 2025)
  • Wealthsimple Gold coins: The company will deliver 99.99% pure gold Wealthsimple-branded coins, including 500 limited edition 1oz Wealthsimple coins, produced and minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. Physical gold coin redemption will be available starting in November 2025.
  • Retirement Accelerator: Most Canadians earn more money to invest later in life, when there’s the least time for it to grow. With responsible borrowing and the right payback schedule, clients can soon start taking advantage of earlier market entry in their investing career with this new low-interest loan to maximize RRSP contributions. (Q1 2026)
  • Norbert’s Gambit: A top request among advanced investors, clients will soon access the currency conversion technique that allows investors to skip high FX spreads by converting Canadian dollars to US dollars (or vice versa) at competitive rates. (Q1 2026)
  • Advanced options strategies: Clients will get access to more advanced option strategies, including secured puts, debit call spreads, debit put spreads, credit put spreads, credit call spreads, short iron condors, and short iron butterflies. (Q4 2025 to Q1 2026)
  • AI research trading features: Clients will soon have access to an AI-powered research-and-trading dashboard built to enhance the investing experience. They can also use natural language to look up stocks of interest (“find healthcare companies with earnings reports this week”), analyze performance patterns, and get concise summaries of market drivers. It’s designed to deliver actionable insights—faster—while helping investors understand not just what’s moving, but why. (Q4 2025 to Q1 2026)
